FO: Gift Set
今週頑張って作った手提げ袋、ティッシュケース、小物入れをあわせるとこんな感じです。
２セット作って、これからやってくるお客様にあげます。
ところどころ縫い目が微妙なところもあるけど、「気持ち」よね。
So I have made 2 sets of gift set with my boxy bag, tissue case, and a zipper pouch.
I will give them to our house guests over the Labor Day weekend.
I forgot to top stitch around the zipper for the zipper pouch (I definitely need my own tutorial post so that I can follow my own instruction without deviating).
Thought that counts, right?

FO: Zipper Pouches
ファスナーつきの小物入れを作りました。
Made a couple of zipper pouches. It had been a while since I last made zipper pouches and I needed some refreshment instructions. I should make notes as I go so that I don't have to rummage through my Pinterest to find my favorite tutorial or so that I don't forget when to add a tag or pull tab.
I thought of making a hand written notes but then I realized why don't I make my own tutorial post so that it's easily accessible with photos. I definitely should. Next time.

FO: Boxy Bag Ver. 2
箱型手提げ袋、完成。
本当言うと、無地の緑色の布をジグザグ模様と合わせて、葉っぱ模様の布は内布にしたかったのだけど、サイズを間違えて布を切った上に、あまり布の長さが足りなくて切り直せなくて結局葉っぱ模様が外側の布になりました。
だから柄的に、ちょっと微妙じゃない？
作り直せる時間なし。
まぁ、あげるものだから、気持ち、ってことで。
写真だと大きく見えるけど、高さはジュースの缶よりちょっと高いぐらいよ。
I initially wanted to use a solid green to match with the chevron for outer shell and use the leafy fabric for the lining. I cut the wrong size for the leafy fabric and did not enough fabric left to re-cut so I had to use the leafy fabric for outer shell.
So, aesthetically, it's a bit of "meh" to me.
But I don't have enough time to re-make them. Oh well.

WIP: Boxy Bag Ver. 2-2
箱型手提げ袋の続き。
アイロンかけて接着芯張ったところで終了。だってスチームかけてのアイロン作業は暑いんだもの。
I've been binge watching Project Runway Season 1 and 2 and have not been sewing much these days.
I am surprised that as much as I don't like ridiculous reality TV shows, I actually enjoy Project Runway very much. Especially Season 2 was much better than Season 1.
Anyway, still slowly working on the boxy bag. I put the fusible interface on and done for now. It's just too damn hot in my sewing room with hot iron on for so long.

FO: Tote Bag
先日の箱型手提げ袋とおそろいでトートバッグを作りました。
しゃきっと立ってて、ちょっとうれしい。
これも練習用なのでヒジョーにシンプルです。
中はこんな感じ。
一応中には大きめのポケットがついてて、マジックテープでポケットの口を押さえています。
初めて磁石のスナップボタンを使ってみました。（私、トートバッグの口がガバガバ開くのがいやなの）思ったほど難しくなくて、ほっ。

Green Onion
夕ご飯用にグリーンオニオン（ワケギみたいな葱）を一束買ったので、切り落とした根っこの部分を花壇畑に植えました。
根の生えてるところから２センチぐらいしか残さずに切ったのに、翌朝にはもうこんなに伸びてたよ。
ちなみにこれは（↓）は春に植えたやつ。
必要な時にちょきっとはさみで切って使います。前は窓辺で水だけで育ててたんだけど、やっぱり土に入れたら育ちがいい。
もう一体何度刈り取ったことでしょう。もう底なしのようにまた生えてくるからすごい。

FO: Boxy Bag
前回の失敗に負けず、何とか完成、箱型手提げ袋。
サイズの確認にもなったし、改良点もわかったのでいい練習になりました。
中途半端に良くできた試作品は捨てるのももったいないけど、人にあげられるほど出来もよくなくて、どうしようか微妙。
After my last failure, I made another boxy bag: this time, a success.
Now that I know how big/small it is and see some improvements I can do, this was a good practice.
The problem of a successful prototype is that it's too good to throw away but not good enough to give away.

Basil Salt
タイバジルに続き、スイートバジルも茂みが大きくなったので、枝をいくつか刈り取りました。
刈り取ったバジルはバジルソルトにしてみました。
洗ったバジルの葉っぱを粗塩と混ぜてフードプロセッサーにかけ、オーブンで水気を飛ばして最後にまたフープロで固まった塩を砕いて完成。
使い道は、まだ未定。
Now that the Thai basil has been pruned a bit, this time, I pruned sweet basil.
And made basil salt.
It was pretty easy to make: pat dry the leaves after washing, put the leaves in a food processor with salt (I used kosher salt), then dry the batch in the low temp oven. Put the mixture back in the food processor to break the lump apart and done.
I just don't know what I am going to use the salt for...

Bush Beans
インゲンの芽が出た！
朝見たときには頭がやっと出てるぐらいだったのに、夕方にはしゃっきり双葉が出てて、翌朝起きたらもう本葉が出てた。
Bush beans are growing fast!
When I saw then in the morning, it was barely coming out of the soil. In the evening, they were all 2 inches tall and the next morning the true leaves are already coming out.

Fried Okra
毎日ガシガシ育つ庭のオクラ。ちょっと面倒くさいけど、フライにするとおやつみたいにポリポリいくらでも食べれてしまう。
I have to restrain myself not to eat them before finish frying all the batch. Otherwise I will eat as I fry and nothing will be left when I'm done frying.

Failure: Boxy Bag
うーん、失敗作。
箱型の小さい手提げ袋を作ろうと思ったんだけど、なんか縫うとこ間違えて使い物にならない平べったい物体が出来てしまった。
外側の布が思ったよりふにゃふにゃで形がきれいに出ないし。
あぁ、失敗作。練習用ということで次に期待！

I totally sewed it to a wrong demension. It was supposed to be an upright boxy bag, not this flat thing.
I did use fusible fleece for lining but I think I should have fused it to the outer fabric (I got lazy).
Well, at least it was my prototype. We'll see how I can fix this.

Doctor Day Recap
1年ぶりにかかりつけのお医者さんに行って健康診断してきました。
結果は：
１．健康です。具合が悪くて行ったわけではないので当たり前。
２．子宮頸がん検査を勧められる。もう何年もやってないから。去年も断ったんだけど、今年も断って、お医者さんにいかに定期検査が大事かお説教される。でももう20代でもないし、どう考えても私がヒトパピローマウィルスに感染する確立は低いので、わざわざ検査しなくても子宮頸がんになるリスクあまりなし。
３．破傷風予防注射を勧められる。最後に破傷風の予防注射したのが9年か10年ぐらい前なのと、別に予約を入れなくてもすぐできるのでこれはやりました。（破傷風の予防接種は１０年ごとにするのが勧められています）注射されたのなんて、何年ぶり？それこそ最後の破傷風の予防注射以来じゃない？この予防接種には、最近はやってる百日咳の予防も混合されているので、これで私あと１０年は大丈夫ね。
４．一親等内で大腸ガンがいるので私はハイリスクということで、大腸内視鏡検査を勧められる。（普通は５０歳以上の人に勧める検査）これも去年勧められて丁重に断って、今年も断る。でも検査前日にバリウムいっぱい飲んだら２、３キロはやせるよと言われてちょっと心ゆらぐ。検査当日は全身麻酔だから運転手がいるし、健康そのものの体に、検査とはいえ全身麻酔までして余計具合悪くなる必要なし。
５．ほくろ除去を勧められる。実は今年に入って横腹にものすごく黒いほくろが出来てるのを発見して、気にはなっていたんだよね。医者にもやっぱり発見されて、ほくろにしては黒すぎるから、ちゃちゃっと取っちゃいましょう、と言われました。気になってはいたのでこれはやってもいいかな、と思ったけど、お医者さんの予約がいっぱいでまた別の日に予約とって行かないといけないのが面倒くさいので、これは様子見。
６．鼻の中がかなり荒れていると指摘される。花粉症が今年はひどくて、最近ずっと右側の鼻が痛いな、と思ってたんだけど、右側は中が腫れちゃってて奥まで見えないよと言われた。ちょうど鼻づまり用の鼻スプレーが切れていたので処方箋を出してもらう。
お医者さんのあとは歯医者さんに行ってクリーニング（歯石除去？）。これは問題なく終了。
これで今年のお医者さんの日も無事に終わり、心おきなく来年まで過ごせます。
So I had my doctor day. The results are:
1. Yup, I am totally healthy.
2. Was recommended to do a pap smear. I know, my last pap smear was ages ago. But I'm not in the high-risk age group and I don't think I have more than normal risk of getting HPV. I just don't see why I need to voluntarily surrender myself for such an invasive procedure when no risk factor is present. So I chose to listen to the whole spiel that the doctor had to give me.
3. Was recommended to get a tetanus booster, since my last shot was 9 to 10 years ago. This one, I got it right then and there. It was what is called Tdap, so it's a vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough. Now I am good for another 10 years.
4. Was recommended to do colonoscopy since I am in a high risk group. Ok, so yeah, my father had colon cancer, but he was overweight, has high blood pressure, had a really unhealthy life style and eating habits all his life like eating dinner at 11 pm every day with no exercise ever in his life. He was doomed to get it anyway. Why would I put myself to a general anesthesia and all the pre-exam colon emptying torture when I have no reason to believe any polyp existence in my colon.
5. Was recommended to do a mole removal. There is a really small but definitely very black non-regular-mole-like mole on my flank, which has surfaced in the past year, and the doctor being a good doctor noticed it without me telling about it. I would have done the removal if the doctor could do it right away but she was too fully booked that I had to make another appointment for the procedure. I am just too lazy to go to doctor again, so we shall see...
6. Inside of my nostrils are very badly swollen. Yeah, allergy has been pretty bad this year. My doctor said she couldn't even see inside very far because of the swelling. I just ran out of my steroid nose spray that I got a few years ago (which had been expired long ago) so got a new Rx.
7. I also had teeth cleaning done as well, which went just fine.
Now I am good for doctors until next year.

WIP: Butterick 4443 Polka Dot Dress
次はこれを作ろうと思っています。
まだまだ裁縫初心者なのでスカートが続きます。いつかシャツとかパンツとか作れるようになれるといいんだけど。
My next project will be Butterick 4443, a flare skirt with bodice with princess seam.
Yes, I will finally get out of the knit zone and move up to a first-ever woven dress.
I don't want to be making skirts and dresses all the time, but I have to make a baby step. Someday, I would like to be able to sew tailored shirt and pants. Someday, someday.

最寄のスーパーにヤクルト売ってた。
ヤクルトって、考えてみたら奇妙な名前よね。
ちなみにカルピスはこちらではカルピコと改名されて売られています。
「カルピス」っていう響きが、「牛のおしっこ」と言っている様に聞こえてしまうかららしいよ。
カルピコって言われると、パピコを思い出しちゃって、アイス食べたくなるけどね、私は。

Fall Garden
トマトは惨敗に終わったけど、ナスとオクラが頑張ってくれているので、めげずに秋も花壇畑頑張ります。
トマトを抜いて空いた場所に秋の野菜を植えました。
左上から時計回りで、絹さや、スイス・チャード（フダンソウ？）、ほうれん草、レタス、キュウリ、違う種類のレタス、インゲン、にんじん。
ど素人だからどこまで育つかは疑問だけど、種は安いのでダメもとでもゴー。
I amended the soil in our vegetable garden and planted some fall vegetables.
Snow peas, swiss chard, spinach, romaine, carrots, beans, salad bowl blend, and cucumber.
I have what we call fire hands (opposite of green thumb) so I don't know how much they will grow, but it's so fun to grow things in the garden. I hope they can grow like our eggplants and okra, which are still producing strongly without us much taking care of them.
We shall see.

Eggplant
この国のナスはでかい。一体これ1個で、日本のナス、いくつ分よ？！って感じじゃない？
もちろんこれはスーパーで買った。うちで育ててるのは日本のナスだからさすがにこんなに大きくはならない。
マーボーナスもどきを夕ご飯に作ったわけです、このナスで。
基本的にオットはナスが好きではないんだけど、家で作ったナスを浅漬けにしたらよく食べたので、彼の中でのナス高感度があがったこの時期に、辛めなマーボーナスなら食べてくれるかと思ったわけです。辛いの好きだからね、あの人。
出来上がった茶色いナスとひき肉の炒め物を見たオット、ものすごーく嫌そうな顔してくれたわ。
しっかり見ちゃったわ、あの顔。
一生懸命作った後に、味見もしないのに、あの顔。
しばいとく？
これ食うか、空腹を我慢するか、という2択で、嫌な顔しつつも結局食べた感想は、「思ったほど悪くなかった」ですって。
でもナスは避けて食べてたけどね。しっかり見たわよ、ナスだけ残った皿。
まぁ、思ったほど悪くなかったと思ってもらえただけでよしとしとく？
私って出来た嫁だな。

FO: Butterick B5454 Wrap Dress
ラップドレス完成。
どっちかというと、似合わないかも（泣）
自分で服を作るデメリットは、時間をかけて布を切って、縫い合わせてからしか試着できないってことよね。
そして試着して初めて「むむむ、違うかも？」って思った時には、もうそこまで費やした時間がもったいなくて引き下がれないし。
このワンピースは、ちょっと微妙。
西洋式だから右前だしね。死人だわ、私。（こんなときばっかり仏教徒）
犬の尻尾、写真に入ってるしね。

According to my measurement, I should cut size 12. However, considering the finished measurements, I went for a size 8. I'm glad I did.
I also chopped off 4 inches from the 3/4 sleeve to make a 1/2 sleeve, and took in abut 1/2 inch to fit my arm better (I don't like sleeves bunching up when I wear a cardi over it).
When I was placing the patterns on the fabric, I was not paying attention to the grainline of the front bodice and I cut it wrong so the diagonal neck line parallels bias line of the fabric. Unfortunately, I did not have enough fabric to re-cut, so I put narrow strips of fusible knit interface, added FOE to bind the neckline, then turn the FOE-bound neck line inside and top-stitched.
I wore the finished dress all day and washed it and the neckline held its shape. Phew.
To be honest, this was kind of "...Meh..." to me. I don't know, I just did not love it. I wasn't digging the pleats either. I don't think I look good in it.
One thing I did not like about the pattern was that the sleeve head is way too high. I thought it was way too high when I cut the pattern; I read somebody's review saying it's too high (and the reviewer did alter it if I remember correctly); but I'm only a novice sewer, I don't know if it was really, too high; there was only 1 reviewer who mentioned about the sleeve head being too high, out of 20 or so I read; so I kept it as is.
And it WAS too high. I do not like the little pinch of fabric sticking out there.
Good thing about the dress: I like the fact that I can wear it without a cami underneath. The fabric is a bit too thick and sticky, so I wouldn't probably wear it in a humid climate. But for now, it keeps me warm in my freezing office.
After wearing it all day, I think it grew on me a little. Not literally but metaphorically. So I have decided to keep it. (Yes, I thought of just ditching it) I shall see how often I will reach for it in the morning when I pick what to wear.

Thai Basil
春にタイバジルの苗を花壇に植えました。
灼熱の太陽の陽に負けるどころかぐんぐん育ちすぎて、茂みが大きくなりすぎたので枝を剪定。
切った枝はもったいないので乾かして乾燥ハーブにして保存しようかと思います。
でもこの調子で育ってくれると乾燥ハーブを使う必要すらないかも。
We planted Thai basil in the spring. The bush became too big and it is blocking the spot light that's sitting on the ground upward against the palm tree behind the Thai basil bush, and it growing over the sweet basil next to it, so I cut quite a lot of stems off.
I am thinking of just drying them to preserve them as dried herb. But at the current rate of growth, we may never need the dried Thai basil.

WIP: Butterick B5454 Wrap Dress
次はラップドレスの予定。
裁縫室を作ったおかげで散らかし放題でも全然平気よ。
My next sewing project is Butterick B5454 knit wrap dress.
Somehow I was thinking I would only need one belt and only cut one.
But of course I would need 2 to tie the dress around me. Silly me. Now I have to go back my left over scrap, and see if I have enough length to cut another belt.

WIP: Tiki Porch
裏庭のポーチの天井にすだれを貼り付けてみました。1枚目張り終わったとこ。
この後、足りなかった部分にまた貼り付けて完成予定。
ついでに天井のファンも新しく設置してみました。
Putting reed fencing material on the backyard porch. We need to put a narrower strip next to cover the part that the first sheet did not cover.
Also, the Man of the House really wanted a ceiling fan there, so he put that up there as well.
Porch is getting to look gooooood.

Okura!
雨が降ったらオクラが一日でめっきり成長しててびっくりした。
1センチぐらいに切って、パン粉の衣をつけて揚げたらおいしくってもりもり食べちゃった。
ちなみにトマトはうまく育てられなくて思うほど実をつけられなかったけど、オクラとナスは焼けるような日差しの中でも育っててすごい。

映画 Backdraft
「ザ・タワー」を見た後で、やっぱり次はあれを見なくちゃね、ということになり、なつかしの映画、「バックドラフト」を見ました。
星三つ。
火は生き物ですね。
ちなみに料理の鉄人のテーマソングです。
バックドラフトとは、密室などで火災が起きたときに、一旦燃え上がった火が、室内の酸素が不足することで鎮火状態になる時に、火がヒュルヒュルッと後戻りする様子です。鎮火状態になっても室内では可燃ガスが増え、ここでドアを開けたりして新鮮な空気が取り込まれると、ガス爆発みたいにどわーっと火が出てくるわけですね。

Anyway, since we watched The Tower, we thought we had to watch Backdraft and it was on Netflix conveniently. It must have been part of the Netflix algorithm. Considering how much Kurt Russell we watch, I'm surprised that Backdraft hadn't been on top of the Netflix recommendation.

韓国映画の「ザ・タワー 超高層ビル大火災」を見ました。
星三つ。
前半部分は演技もくさいし、なんていうか、これでもか！ってほどにありきたりな展開でどうしようかと思ったけど、火災が発生してからはそれなりに楽しめました。
逆に言えば火災が発生するまでが無駄に長すぎる。
でも夏見る超大作！みたいなノリで見るにはちょうど良かったかも。
火災はクリスマスイブに起こるんだけど、韓国のクリスマスって、日本とあまり変わらないのね？
サンタクロースが乗ったクリスマスケーキとか作ってケーキやさんが大繁盛するのは日本だけかと思った。

It got better once the fire started. They should have started the fire earlier.
So, overall, at the end, it wasn't too bad.
What was interesting was that the Koreans celebrate Christmas kind of the same way Japanese do. I thought it was only Japanese who would order "Christmas cake" with a Santa on it.

FO: Jalie 2921 Scarf Collar Knit Top
首周りがスカーフなノースリーブトップ完成。
水玉がうるさすぎて全然スカーフが見えないし。
近づいても見えないし。
これの一番右の奴なんだけど。
Finished Jalie 2921 Scarf Collar Knit Top. Sleeveless, view C.
Used the left over fabric from D2N Skater Dress, the flimsy thin ITY knit. The thinness was not much of an issue for this top and it was a perfect thickness for the scarf actually.
Since it was a left over fabric, I did not have enough length, so the bodice is about 3/4 inch short and scarf is about 8 inches short.
After all, I think the scarf length was just fine, if the scarf can be ever visible in the photos.
I like the clean finish of scarf insertion, the way the bodice is rolled up in-between the scarf folded in half lengthwise and stitch the scarf shut except for a tiny opening at the end, and pull the bodice out. The thinness and slipperiness of the fabric helped.
This was my very first Jalie pattern and I cut size S based on the measurements except for the above mentioned shortening. I think the fit is just right, though the bodice is a bit blousier than other people's completed top. Other people's version when I searched looked more fitted with a lot of negative ease. Not that it matters since I like the fit.
Armhole and hem are finished with twin needle.
I like the design a lot. It has the V neck that I like but no need to worry about bra showing because the scarf covers it pretty well. I originally bought this pattern because I liked the bow version but I really like this simpler scarf-through-the-whole version now.
Well, what should I make next? I may have to move up to something woven... Oh, I fear woven, can't hide the flaws...
