Pattern Stash: Simplicity 1916

Last of my July project goal has been completed.
It is Simplicity 1916, a knit top with faux wrap bodice.

I made a view D, an empire waist faux wrap.
I guess I made almost exactly like the one on envelope model.

I cut a size 12, shortened 3/4" above waist, and 3/4" at hem.
I also pivoted the shoulder inwards to make it narrower at the shoulder. This alteration also made the front neck shorter and I left it that way, which worked well for my flat chest.
I made the sleeves an elbow length.

The fabric is ITY. I can go down a couple of sizes for more fitted look but I think this has good ease for this type of fabric. I don't want to wear this fabric skin tight.

I'm not loving it yet. I think the print was a bit too much for me. We'll see if it will grow on me.

Pattern Stash: Simplicity 1805

My July goal #2 is completed. Summery sweater. Oxymoron? In England, I have learned that the "summer heat" comes in only short bursts and the rest of the summer stays pretty cool. It is hard for me to remember to grab a jacket when I go out because my brain is so used to think it should be hot in July.

The pattern is Simplicity 1805. I made a raglan sleeve version.

Although I'm supposed to be a size Small, after looking through other people's reviews, I sized down and cut a size XS.
The sleeves were pretty long and I wanted the sleeves to hit right around the pointy elbow bone (olecranon), so I shortened the sleeves by 2".

The fabric is a poly sweater knit. It is silver/gray with some shimmering. It's 100% poly, but since it's open weave, it's not bad, at least in England.

I had bought this lace trimming for another project. When it arrived in mail (local shops are pretty worthless here so everything is bought online, Ebay, to be specific), however, I realized that the trimming was a bit too off-white and too small in scale for the project that I bought it for.

But it kind of went well together with this silvery sweater knit, so I used it for the sleeves and hem. I really like how it turned out.

Also, this top is rather long. I'm not really a belt-wearer like the envelope model, so instead, I decided to try shirring. My very first shirring and it was much easier than I thought!

I added 5 rows of shirring about 4" from the hem.

The pattern instruction calls for gathering the neckline before you put the neck band. I cheated and just eased the neckline to the neck band. Maybe because of that? my neck line was a bit too loose, showing my bra strap a bit.

When I was done with shirring at the hem, I had a light bulb moment, and added a top stitch at the neck band with elastic thread still in my bobbin. It tightened the neck line just enough to make the neckline to sit better.

This was supposed to be part of my Pattern Stash Contest entry, but I have just realized that with the shirring, and maybe with trimming, this is disqualified... Oh well. It is still a pattern stash completed for me and I'm very happy with my sweater!

Sickly Dog

My Blue Heeler got colitis. Probably from eating horse poo or something she shouldn't have been eating. She had diarrhea for 2 full days and no sign of improvement so I had to take her to a vet.

Between the two dogs, I got so many medications, it's hart to keep track.

By the way, we recently found that there is such a thing called Texas Heeler, which is a Australian Cattle Dog and Australian Shepherd mix. Ours may well be Texan.

Pattern Stash: New Look 6892

July goal #1, New Look 6892 completed. I'm still working on redistributing the gathers so that the print sits correctly at the center. Please ignore the wrinkles. I took the photos after wearing it all day.

I made a View C, the cap sleeve version. This pattern is very loose fitting as you can tell from the cover model. So I cut a whopping size 6.

The fabric is cotton voile panel print. It has bit of glitters on the print.

It would have been nicer if this was a border print. But as I said it was a panel print and I only had 1 panel, just enough to put the 2 bodice patterns along the lower print and use the top print for the sleeve.

Because I was cutting the sleeves on a single layer, I forgot to flip the pattern and cut two right sleeves. I had just enough fabric to cut a new sleeve, but could not place the print to sit at the same place, so my left sleeve has less print than the right.

I like the style and this was a simple project. My only regret is that because I cut such a small size, while I like the amount of ease, the armhole and sleeves are a bit too small. If I make it next time, I would just cut size 10 or 12 that I'm supposed to be and take the width of the bodice from the center back/front.

July Goal: Pattern Stash Contest

Now that it's July and my Japanese Sewalong project is finished, I have signed up on Pattern Review's Pattern Stash Contest.

Pattern Stash Contest

Not that I will ever aim for making the most patterns but this is a good motivation to stick to what I already have. My goal is the above 3. Obviously, I bought these patterns in the U.S. and brought them with me all the way to the U.K. so I have to make them this year and make them now before it gets cold again!

Here is my completed Japanese Sewalong 2-piece set.

Summary:
The fabric is a mid-weight cotton with some horizontal ribbing texture that I bought in Japan, that was taken back to the U.S. and came with me to the U.K. It is soft, but does not have good drape so I chose a pattern that is structured than flowy.

The pattern is from a Japanese sewing book by Machiko Kayaki, Simple Chic Dress Up Dress Down, and it's the #8 pattern.

For the top, I cut a size 11, lengthened the hem by 2 1/2", narrowed the shoulder by pivoting the shoulder strap inward towards center back. I still had gaping around the front neck so I pinched a bit at neck and removed some length by inserting a dead dart, which was then removed from the pattern.

The original pattern calls for back button closure all the way down the center back, but I changed it to an invisible zip closure.

The original pattern came with all-in-one facing. Because of my shoulder alteration, the facing pattern did not match so I just free-handed the facing pattern., then added a lining below it. The lining is a cotton poplin.

The skirt is a basic, pleated skirt with a bit of top stitching at the pleat. I cut a size 11, shortened so that the length is 20". The pattern wasn't lined so I lined it with the same black poplin I used for the top.

I let out a bit to accommodate my expanding waist line but now it's a bit loose. Note to myself: stick with size 11.

Although I added a back contouring at the center back so the pattern doesn't match all the way, I was so happy to see how the top of the center back where the seam is vertical made the perfect pattern match (see the flowers between the paws).

Goodwood Festival of Speed

Came back from Goodwood Festival of Speed, an annual car event that supposedly attracts 100,000 people each day during the 3 days.
As I mentioned yesterday, I wore my Japanese Sewalong 2-piece set. Totally seasonally inappropriate (the fabric design is for fall) but it's ok, nobody cares.
