State of the Garden

2 seedlings in the spring turned into an overgrown tomato jungle.
Overflow growth (aka sucker galore) is now bigger than what's in the garden.

Crocodile Lounge Shorts

Since it is still pretty hot and humid, I wanted a pair of comfortable lounge shorts.
My very first pants creation, I think.

The pattern is Butterick B5044. Other than the pocket piece, there is ONLY 1 pattern piece. I never knew a pair of pants can be made with just one pattern piece.

I made a View C, which is a Bermuda length shorts, with lined pockets.
Now that I have a fancy sewing machine, I used one of the decorative stitches to topstitch the opening of the pocket. I know, the flowers don't go well with the crocodiles but that's fine, I like it.

The main fabric is a crinkly textured cotton that I bought in Japan. I used the black/pink version for a Sis Boom Meghan Peasant Dress before.

My regular presser foot did not work well with the crinkly texture of the fabric for the horizontal seam (it stretched out the crinkles too much) so I used the walking foot the entire time, which is fine, because my fancy sewing machine has a fancy integrated walking foot. Yey for the new machine.

The pocket lining is a scrap left-over rayon charmeuse. It feels very fluid and luxurious in my pocket.
I cut a size Small but it is still pretty baggy. I may go down a size for the next one.
The length of my fabric was pretty much exactly the length of the shorts so the pattern matching of the pockets are not perfect. At least the crocodile stripe continues at the same height so that's enough matching for me.
I was wearing jeans while I was making these shorts. But the construction of the shorts went very fast and done in the morning so I wore the shorts the rest of the day as soon as it was completed. I should make a few more pairs...

Return of the Tomatoes

Our tomato plant has been somewhat dormant for the past month like I was in this hot weather but it has started to grow fruit again.

The plan is now overgrown too much: pretty much suckers galore. (And I have no intention to work on the yard in this weather)
I don't think enough nutrient goes each end of the plant and that's why each fruit is so tiny now. Well, I don't eat them, so that's ok. It's just bitch to pick all these tiny ones.

Back to the Sewing Room

It has been a very hot monsoon season and I had had no energy to do anything for the past month.
I finally got my heavy ass up in the sewing room and made a simple T shirt.

The pattern is Maria Denmark Kirsten Kimono Tee. It is a free download if you sign up with the newsletter.
It is a kimono-sleeved, boat neck T-shirt and comes with whopping 2 pattern pieces: front bodice and back bodice.

The fabric is a left over from my Jalie dress. The blue neck band is also the same fabric that I used for the Jalie dress's waist band.

I cut the pattern for size S. Then I realized that the pattern did not include seam allowance. So I decided to use the pattern as if it included a 1/4" seam allowance (for serger) and cut the fabric as is, except for hem (added 1") and sleeve hem (added 1/4").
I think it worked fine, except that my hip is a bit tight.

It was very simple to make and very comfortable to wear. My coverstitching skill is getting better and I'm very happy with my hems. It also uses VERY little fabric.

The fabric pattern is a bit "out there" for a T-shirt but I like everything about it and it definitely helped to boost what other people call "sewing mojo."
