Love Mr. Darcy

ジェーン・オースティンの「高慢と偏見」に出てくるダーシーという登場人物が好きなのです。
映画化、テレビ化も何度もされていて、キーラ・ナイトレーが主役のもある。（「プライドと偏見」）
イギリスのテレビ局、BBCが製作したテレビドラマでは、若いコリン・ファースがダーシー役をやっています。
もうこのコリン・ファースのダーシーがたまらなく好きなわけです。

そんなわけで、ジェーン・オースティンファンがダーシーを主人公にして、ダーシーの目から見た「高慢と偏見」を書いた小説を読んでいます。いわゆるファン・フィクションというやつです。漫画で言ったら同人誌みたいなものです。
３部作で２冊目を読み終えたところ。
（ちなみに「ブリジット・ジョーンズの日記」もある意味ファンフィクションみたいなもの。コリン・ファースの役の名前はそのままダーシーだし。）

この本の何がいいって、全編ダーシー！って、彼が主人公だから当たり前なんだけど。
最初はヒロインの天敵、最後はヒロインと結ばれる運命な、まさに王子様な役にもかかわらず、原作では実は出場場面が少なくて彼が普段はどんな人なのかあまり出てこないので、そんな彼が全編出場なのはもうファンにとってはそれはもう少女マンガの世界です。
っつか、原作はもう古くて著作権とか切れてるから、是非少女マンガで描いて欲しい。
絶対買う。誰か描いて。

I love Mr. Darcy. I love Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy. He is just perfect.
I've been reading this Jane Austen's fan fiction, "A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman."
Just finished the 2nd book (it's a trilogy) and started the 3rd volume yesterday.
It's basically "Pride and Prejudice" from Mr. Darcy's point of view.
Makes me feel like I'm such a girly-girl.
Just makes me go back to YouTube and watch the Pemberley scene over and over.

New Glasses 眼鏡新調

日本にいる間に、眼鏡を新調しました。それも２つも♪
平安顔の日本人には、アメリカで眼鏡を作るのは一苦労なのです。
なぜなら、

１－まず医者に検眼して処方箋を書いてもらわないといけない。
眼鏡屋さんに医者が常駐してるんだけど、検査に余分に時間がかかるし、医者代かかるし。

２－レンズが厚い。
これはどこまでそうなのか確かではないけど、日本のレンズのほうが薄い、気がする。
でも私の場合、常に目が悪くなっているので、アメリカのレンズが厚いのか、単に目が悪くなってレンズが厚くならざるを得ないのか微妙。

３－顔にあうフレームがない。
レンズが厚すぎるため、必然的にふちの幅のある眼鏡になるわけなんだけど、鼻パッド一体型のフレームは、鼻の低い私の顔にのせるとほっぺに乗ってしまうぐらい、まつげにあたってしまう状態で。
ふちの厚い眼鏡でフリーアームと呼ばれる鼻パッドが独立してるのはほぼ皆無です。
日本のは、鼻パッド一体型でも、かなりそこの部分が日本人の顔に合わせておおきくせせり出ているので日本のなら鼻パッドなくてもいける。

最初に行った眼鏡市場のあまりの安さにカンゲキして弐萬円堂に行ってまたもうひとつ作った。

I honestly do not know and want to know where all the Asians in the U.S. are getting their eye glasses from.
My eyesight is bad. The Rx on my left eye is -10.5 (plus astigmatism is like over 4).
So naturally, the lenses get thicker and leave me only with plastic frame option.

Well, the thing is, it is VERY hard to find a pair of plastic frames with adjustable free-arm nose pad.
This is very important when my face is flat as a pancake and there is no nose bridge to keep my glasses away from my face.
Even if I find one, they are seldom wide enough to fit on my big face.
(By the way, frames in the U.S. have longer temple, I guess to fit the narrower but deeper head shape, so the ends get bent over quite a bit too)

So, it was a joy to be able to find multiple pairs at a store in Japan that I liked and that fit on my face, and they were very affordable (plus no cost for optometrist's exam since you don't need a prescription from a doctor to make glasses).
So I bought 2 pairs. Still much cheaper than one pair I made in the U.S. a few years ago.

Because of my strong prescription and the fact that it was Golden Week, both of the stores I went to to get each pair from said it would take a week to 10 days to get the glasses ready.
It was totally fine with me. I just needed the frames fitted right then and there since I won't be able to be there physically when the glasses are ready for pick-up. But as soon as they knew I would be leaving the country, they somehow expedite it and both of the pairs were ready withing a week.
Love Japanese customer service.
I am very happy with both of the pairs.

Marketing niche right there, people.

Sis Boom Meghan Peasant Dress

トーカイで買ったワニ柄の布ですっぽりかぶって着れるシャツを作りました。
超初心者用のパターンを買ってみたんだけど、これがまた大失敗なパターンでちょっとショックです。
型紙どおり、作り方どおりに作ったら、それはもうマタニティ・・・（泣）
縫ってる時間より縫い目をほどく作業に倍ぐらい時間がかかりました。
せっかくのかわいい柄がもったいないので、とりあえず幅を縮めてマタニティに見えない程度には修復できたかと。

Originally cut XS and made it straight XS following the instruction exactly. ...WRONG idea.

The instruction is kind of ...weird at a few parts of the construction and I would change the order if I ever make this again. It tells you to hem the sleeve flat but leaving 1/2 inch at both ends then it tells you to sew side seams while you hold the unhemmed edge of the sleeve, then finish the hemming of the sleeve. Same for the neck opening. I prefer just hem it as a tube instead of fiddling with the 1/2'' edge.

Also, according to my measurements, I am actually size Small, but went down a size hoping to have a more fitted style.
Even XS was too maternity, a serious 6-month-preggo look. Ended up making a center back seam, taking in 2.5", and took in 1.25" from each of the front sides.

The length of the elastic called for in the instruction is also too short as many of the reviewers mentioned.

I am just glad that I was able to somehow salvage it with my very limited sewing skill and knowledge.

パイナップル

一番好きな食べ物が何かを聞かれたら梨（二十世紀）だけど、パイナップルも結構好き。
２ドル以下ならまず間違いなく買うし、３ドル以下でもかなりの確立で買う。
一度パイナップルの塊を経験してしまうと、缶詰のパイナップルはシロップに漬かっててももういけない感じ。

花壇を作ったのをきっかけに、食べたパイナップルの葉っぱを捨てずに育ててみることにしました。
最初の二つは直に花壇に植えたんだけど、イマイチ根付いてるのかよくわかんないので、それ以降のはとりあえず水耕栽培中。
育ててるなんて言ったら仰々しいけど、ひねり取った葉っぱの部分をプラスチックのコップに入れて窓辺においてあるだけ。

最近やっと根が出てきたよ。
いつかうちの花壇がパイナップル農場みたいになるのかな。

Wrath of Khan

Yes, I finally watched "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

OK, I have to admit, it was not as bad as I thought. Aside from the 80-ness, it was probably as good as the reboot.

But, wait, what had happened to the Captain Kirk's perfectly handsome face in the last 15 years???
That's more than "Oh, he just got chubby."
Sad.

Is it wrong to joke about calling the Man of the House a Trekki because he rates the Wrath of Kahn 5 stars (on a 5-star Netflix scale) when he was actually wearing a Star Wars shirt?

白菜漬け

白菜漬けを作りました。
白菜漬けの素を使ったらとっても簡単。

マルコは新潟の会社なのね。
重石はないので、ビール瓶とスポーツドリンクを重石代わりにつかいました。

白菜漬けにした白菜は、先っちょの葉っぱより、芯のほうが好きです。
ちょっとしょっぱかったかな。

Captain Kirk

Knowing him only as a chubby old man, it never occurred to me that William Shatner was a good looking man. 

After watching "Star Trek Into Darkness," the Man of the House ordered that I watch the original "The Wrath of Khan" over the Memorial Day weekend and that in order to understand "The Wrath of Khan," I also have to watch the original Star Trek episode of Khan first.

Well, I watched it, at least the episode when Khan was first introduced. And what intrigued me the most was how handsome Captain Kirk was. The contour of his face, his eyes, his nose. His face is a perfect handsome man. 

Hmmm, how did I miss that. I guess that is the power of first impression.
