Jalie 3024 Knit Dress

先日の短パン作りでロックミシンを使ったついでに、グレーのニット生地でワンピース作ってみました。タンクトップワンピースですな。
短パンと同じく、Jalieというカナダの会社の型紙。やっぱりここの会社の型紙、いいわ！

Jalie 3024 Round Neck Front

 この型紙の何がすごいってよ、前身ごろと後ろ身ごろが全く同じなので、前後ろに着ても全然オッケー。私は丸首バージョンとVネックバージョンで作ってみたので、気分によって前と後ろを逆にして違った見た目が楽しめてしまう優れもの。

お昼ごはん食べに行って帰ってきたとこなので、かなりお腹引っ込めです。

小汚いシャベルとかバケツとか普通に写ってて失礼。

Since I had my serger still set up with grey thread from my last shorty shorts project, I decided to make another grey jersey garment, totally ignoring my sewing plan.

Well, what can I say, I am totally in love with Jalie.
This is Jalie 3024, a knit dress pattern. I cut a straight size S. I really like the fit. (I know I have sway back issues there, but that's my problem)

The main fabric is rayon jersey and the waist band portion is a remnant of my shorty shorts project.
The rayon jersey drapes beautifully but clings to my body and shows my belly too much so I added a knit half lining as well.

What is genius about this pattern is that there is no difference between front bodice and back bodice so you can mix and match the bodice design options and you can wear it either side as front.
I made one side as round neck and the other as cross over, and I can totally wear either way.

...Except, on this particular version, I will have to choose the round neck as my front, even though I like the crossover as my front better.

The issue with my crossover side is that in order for the empire waistband to sit right at my low bust, the fabric has to stretch down, making the front too revealing. Also, since the neck band is thick, my thin rayon shows the neck band bump under the upper crossover bodice, which goes right across my bust, so not very nice looking there.

I think in order for me to use the crossover version, I have to add 1 inch to the bodice.

I had originally planned to add a flounce at the hem (pattern option) but I messed it up. So I ditched the flounce and kept the skirt simple. The length of of the skirt before hemming was exactly where I wanted, so instead of turning up the hem, I rolled-hem it with a bit of lettuce edge effect. Is it too reminiscent of a little girl's sleeping gown?

This is a very comfortable dress. I have to make more. And I have to buy more Jalie patterns.

Jalie 3022 Shorty Shorts

熱いから、家ではくパジャマ兼用短パンが欲しいな、と思って、作ってみました。
型紙はカナダのJalieというところの出している型紙で、ちょっと値段が高いんだけど型紙直さなくてもフィット感がいいので気に入っています。
ウエストバンド、つける方向を前と後ろ間違えてつけたので、ウエストバンドを輪にした縫い目が真正面に出てしまって大失敗。だから正面の写真は見せられません。
中年度あらわなケツで失礼。

 これも後ろ側ね。

Jalie 3022 Back

ピンクの線がお気に入りです。ちょとよれよれだけどね。

I wanted a pair of shorts to wear at home (= pajama pants) and made Jalie 3022.
This is a yoga pants pattern with this shorts option. The shorts are really short!

The main fabric is a left over from MOTH's T-shirt muslin and the pink waist band is a left over from Butterick B5495.

I cut a straight size S. I really like the fit of the Jalie patterns.
I used my serger for construction and coverstitch machine for top stitching.

I wish I could say that  I went bold and used pink thread top stitching for gray fabric as a design decision. But the truth is that I did not have so many gray serger thread cones for both serger and coverstitch machine, so I just set up my serger with gray thread and coverstitch machine with pink thread.

But I did go bold and used the decorative side of the coverstitch on the right side as a design detail. The seam is very wonky (enough that even the MOTH noticed it) but I like it.

The construction was very simple, so I was not paying much attention to what I was doing and I totally put the waist band wrong. When I attached the waist band, I attached the center back of the waist band to the center front of the shorts. So I have a vertical seam in the center front of the waist band. Plus it was sewn with gray thread so the seam really shows with gray thread peaking out tiny bit.
Oh well.

Very simple construction, uses very little fabric. Love it.
I need to make a longer version to replace my tattered pajama pants.

Womanizing Men's T-Shirt

ここ6年で10回も着てないであろう、古いけど状態のいいオットのTシャツを私用のTシャツに作り変えました。
以前から何回か使っているTシャツの型紙を使用。

袖から脇をつめるだけの簡単バージョンにしようかと思ったんだけど、肩幅がかなり広かったのでそでぐりの縫い目をほぐして袖も型紙にそって切りなおしてからまた取り付けました。
文字がちょっとかたむいちゃったけど、よしとする。

The Man of the House had this T-shirt for over 6 years but he had probably worn it less than 10 times. So I took it and turned it into my T-shirt.

I used Sewaholic's Renfrew pattern. I cut a straight size 6.

I originally wanted to just use the side shape of the pattern and sew the sides through sleeves for a quick fix. However, the shoulder was just too wide, so I picked the armhole seams and cut the bodice and sleeves properly. I kept the original neck and shoulder seam as is. I also kept the original sleeve hems as well.

I did not use the hem band that Renfrew uses; instead, just added 3/4" to the bodice hem and turn it up for a quick coverstitched hem.

The bodice is slightly crooked but I like the fit and I just got myself an almost new T-shirt for free.

Heat Wave Continues

熱波、まだまだ通過中。
まだ朝7時半なので、28度で過ごしやすいけど、今日の予想最高気温46度ってさすがに記録的。
車を外に出しておくと、ハンドルとかギアノブとか熱くて触れないです。
私の車は幸いシートカバーが布だけど（安い車だからね）黒い皮シートとかだと、半そで短パンから出た素肌が大変なことになります。それこそやけどする。
熱すぎて、道路工事とか出来ないらしい。（固まらないらしい）
今週末はどこにも行かず、家で涼んでいます。

でもこの灼熱にもまけず、ナスはまだまだ育っています。
さすがに消化が追いつかないので、今日の収穫は全部もらわれていきました。

Holy shit it's hot.

Heat Wave

熱波通過中。熱すぎでね？熱帯夜ではないようだ。でも熱すぎでね？

Sun Gazing

世界最大の太陽望遠鏡のある天文台に行ってきました。
きのこみたいににょきにょき生えてる白いドームはどれも天体望遠鏡施設。光学望遠鏡施設が24個、電波望遠鏡施設が2個あるらしいです。
一番左側の三角のが太陽望遠鏡。

残念ながら、世界最大の太陽望遠鏡で太陽を見ることは出来なかったけど、幸い別の太陽望遠鏡施設を公開していて、生まれて初めて望遠鏡で太陽を見たよ。
太陽フレアと呼ばれる、太陽の表面から爆発で噴出してる炎もよく見えて感激。

天文台だけあって、光害を避けるためにものすごいへき地にあるので、半径20キロは人っ子一人いない砂漠地帯です。
今度は夜やってる星観測ツアーに参加したいです。

The white building is where the solar telescope is housed.

I saw the world's largest solar telescope, from outside.
I wasn't too lucky to see the telescope when it was opened for pubic, but I was lucky enough to go there when they were doing the public solar viewing with another (much smaller) solar telescope.
Now I am proud to say that I have seen the sun through a solar telescope.
It was awesome. I could see the solar flares too.

The observatory is located in the middle of nowhere to avoid the light pollution. There is absolutely nothing around this mountain as far as you can see. It feels funny to realize how much land this country has that is not being used.

It is difficult to find things to do in this triple digit temperature but the peak was significantly cooler (about 84 degrees) and had nice cool breeze so it was fun to walk between the telescopes. I would love to visit there again for the actual stargazing tour sometime.

Wearing My Sleeveless Shirt

ノースリーブシャツ、着てみた。裸足で失礼。アイロンから出たカルキ染みつき（後ろ身ごろ）。
ちなみにスカートは去年？作った。

Here I am in my very first self drafted sleeveless shirt.
I have neglected my iron and it spitted a huge calcium build-up, so that's what the white spot on the back bodice is.

So, yeah, I have issues with my back. Should I go back to my moulage and shorten the back and see what happens? Hmmm, I have to sleep on it.
The skirt is a New Look 6843 that I made last year, by the way.

Sloper to a Sleeveless Shirt

先日完成した、自分の寸法から起こした基本の型紙のフィット感を試すのに、ノースリーブシャツを作ってみました。
試作品なので、オットのお古のシャツを利用。
初めてにしてはよくできたと思うんだよね。
白いボタンがついてたんだけど、とても「男性用Yシャツ」感一杯だったので別のシャツについてた青いボタンに変えました。

Using the sloper that I made the other day from my own measurements, I made a sleeveless shirt.
Since this is sort of a mock-up, I used an old shirt that the Man of the House barely wore and had put in our yard-sale/Goodwill pile.

Since I wasn't sure how much ease the sloper had (well, I knew exactly how many inches of ease it had but you know what I mean), I kept the front button placket as is so that I don't have to worry about adding a closure or not having a closure and not being able to slip on.

I moved the shoulder dart to the side dart. I kept the waist darts front and back, and kept the center back seam for back contouring. Neck and armholes are bound with self fabric bias tape.

Since the white buttons that were originally on the shirt screamed out "men's shirt re-fashion" too much, I changed the buttons to a set of blue buttons that were on another shirt (also from MOTH in the yard sale pile).

I still have some issues with the back: I kind of knew when I finished my moulage. But I really like the fit through my shoulders and armhole. After all, this is my first ever self-drafted pattern, so I am immensely proud.

I followed Suzy Furrer's Craftsy course, "The Bodice Sloper" for this moulage to sloper process. I have to say, I really enjoyed the course and this course is worth every penny. I only purchase Craftsy course when it's on $19.99 sale and this course was no exception, but even for the full price, I think it's still a bargain to get this level of teaching without going to an actual fashion design school.

Suzy's instructions are precise and her diction and mannerism are very professional. She knows the stuff, no joke. This is the kind of instruction I expect from a professional instructor.

I like this class so much that I also purchased a skirt sloper class and pants sloper class. I will probably purchase the rest of her classes when they come on sale again. I even got her text book, which is a great reference book to have.

So, now that I have made my bodice sloper, I have to go back to my New Look 6184 project that I have abandoned midway. Hopefully, my sloper will tell me how I can fix the fitting issues I was having.

Summer Success

今年の花壇は、豊作です。
去年から植わりっぱなしのナスが非常に元気で、こんなにナスを食べるのは人生で初めて、というか、今シーズンだけで人生で今までで食べた全部のナスを足した以上に食べてるかも。
シシトウは10個に1個はからいっていうけど、うちのは全部普通味のようです。

Our garden is doing really good this year.
The two eggplants that we planted last year have been loving the summer. I had never eating this much of eggplants before; rather, I am probably eating more eggplants this season than all the eggplants I had in my life combined.
I heard that one out of ten shishito peppers is hot but so far all of our shishitoes are mild.

Finished Bodice Sloper!

自分の体の寸法を測っておこした基本の型紙完成。寸胴なのがよくわかる。

I have traced my bodice sloper onto a poster paper and my sloper is done.
Now, I have to make a muslin to see if this truly worked. We shall see.

Matt's Wild Cherry

プチトマトが豊作で、トマト好きなオットは大満足。
花壇に生えているバジルとバルサミコ酢で簡単トマトサラダ。
自分ちでせっせと育てたトマトでもやっぱり私はトマト嫌い。

We have never been this successful with out tomatoes before and the Man of the House is very happy with our overgrowing Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes.
I usually make an easy tomato salad with sweet basil from the garden and balsamic vinegar for him.
No matter how precious the tomatoes are to me for having grown them from the seeds, I still do not like tomatoes.

Finished Moulage

まだまだ体の寸法を測って基本となるパターンをおこす作業中。

Yes! My moulage is done! I guess I could shorten a bit in the back and I should have made my moulage #3 but I was so excited with my moulage #2 so I would call it done. (My high figure point- which is the fullest part of the bust- was too high in on my moulage #1 so I re-drew the front bodice)

It is pretty amazing to to have made this super tight fitting "garment" that fit almost perfectly (except for back as aforementioned) to my body just from some body measurements. I wish I could stuff some sew dust in it and make my body double.

Movie: Begin Again

もうひとつお勧め映画。先日のOnceと同じ監督の作品。っていうか、こっちを実は先に見てOnceを知ったのだけど。
キーラ・ナイトレーとマーク・ラファロの映画、「はじまりのうた」を見ました。

よく考えると内容はとてもOnceと似ています。
妻に浮気され、酒びたりになっている元超有名音楽プロデューサーと、一緒に音楽を作ってきた彼と一緒にニューヨークに来たものの、有名になっていく彼においてけぼりの上浮気されて傷心の女性が出会って一緒にデモアルバムを作る話。
Onceと同じように、音楽がとてもいいです。
そしてやっぱりとってもプラトニック。
この監督、なかなかやるな。

One more movie worth mentioning: Begin Again. Actually I watched this first and found Once.
Come to think of, it is very similar to Once.

The guy Mark Ruffalo plays used to be a famous producer but his old fashion philosophy of music making does not go well with the current trend and got fired by the record company he founded.
The girl Keira Knightley plays comes to New York with his boyfriend who she has made music together since uni but feels left behind as the boyfriend (Maroon 5 guy) becomes famous and eventually cheats on her.
The guy hears the girl sing at the open mic night and they decide to make a demo album of her music.

Again, I really like the music. Also, it's very platonic. That platonic aspect really tickles me, who has gotten used to the American, Hollywood storytelling.
Anyway, I really like the director's taste of music. I even like the Maroon 5 guy's song in the movie:
