Pattern Stash: Simplicity 1805

My July goal #2 is completed. Summery sweater. Oxymoron? In England, I have learned that the "summer heat" comes in only short bursts and the rest of the summer stays pretty cool. It is hard for me to remember to grab a jacket when I go out because my brain is so used to think it should be hot in July.

The pattern is Simplicity 1805. I made a raglan sleeve version.

Although I'm supposed to be a size Small, after looking through other people's reviews, I sized down and cut a size XS.
The sleeves were pretty long and I wanted the sleeves to hit right around the pointy elbow bone (olecranon), so I shortened the sleeves by 2".

The fabric is a poly sweater knit. It is silver/gray with some shimmering. It's 100% poly, but since it's open weave, it's not bad, at least in England.

I had bought this lace trimming for another project. When it arrived in mail (local shops are pretty worthless here so everything is bought online, Ebay, to be specific), however, I realized that the trimming was a bit too off-white and too small in scale for the project that I bought it for.

But it kind of went well together with this silvery sweater knit, so I used it for the sleeves and hem. I really like how it turned out.

Also, this top is rather long. I'm not really a belt-wearer like the envelope model, so instead, I decided to try shirring. My very first shirring and it was much easier than I thought!

I added 5 rows of shirring about 4" from the hem.

The pattern instruction calls for gathering the neckline before you put the neck band. I cheated and just eased the neckline to the neck band. Maybe because of that? my neck line was a bit too loose, showing my bra strap a bit.

When I was done with shirring at the hem, I had a light bulb moment, and added a top stitch at the neck band with elastic thread still in my bobbin. It tightened the neck line just enough to make the neckline to sit better.

This was supposed to be part of my Pattern Stash Contest entry, but I have just realized that with the shirring, and maybe with trimming, this is disqualified... Oh well. It is still a pattern stash completed for me and I'm very happy with my sweater!
